Do You Need Heart Rate Monitor and Pedometer

A pedometer is a small device which helps you keep track of all the steps you take in a day. This is generally used by those who do brisk walks to count the number of steps they take to cover a distance which then helps measure their speed.

Benefits of Pedometer

When you are trying to lose weight, having a pedometer can be an essential thing and sometimes quite motivational. And if you are living a sedentary lifestyle then it is all the more true. More the steps you take in a day, more active you become and it also means burning more calories.

Those who are overweight may want to buy a pedometer so that they can keep track of the number of steps they take during a day. If you increase your daily steps by just 30, this will have an effect over a longer period of time. And this increase is quite gradual and most people can handle it. They set themselves a target for the day and after completing their target, they are done for the day’s requirements.

An average person should take about 10,000 steps every day. It might appear a big number but in reality it is not. In fact you will be surprised at the number of steps you take in a walk that lasts 30 minutes.

A pedometer is quite cheap to buy these days and there is not much excuse to not buy it these days.

The number that appears on the pedometer screen is its beauty. These are clear number and different from vague instructions like start eating fewer calories or start doing resistance training. It shows the real truth. The number of steps you took in a day is right there on the screen. It is something lot more tangible to see.

For example, if you set yourself a target to take 5000 steps a day and you end the day with 3,760 steps, then you know it simply by looking at the screen of the pedometer. You must walk more to complete the remaining steps of the target. And once they know, most people get motivated to finish the remaining target.

Every steps they take decrease the remaining number an takes them one step closer to the target they have set. Every step really counts because it is a step towards losing weight. If you are looking for some motivation and setting easy target for you, then a good pedometer is something you should consider to invest in.

Benefits of Heart Rate Monitor

A heart rate monitor is also very helpful in weight loss efforts.

If you have just started exercise recently, then probably you will not need it. However, it does not hurt if you get one because this is a device that will help you do exercise right in the fat burning zone.

The maximum fat loss happens when you do work out at between 80 to 90 percent of your maximum heart rate. An easier way to calculate your maximum heart rate is to deduct your age from the number 220. For example, if you are 40 years old then the maximum heart rate in your case will be 220-40=180 heartbeats per minute.

If you workout at a percentage higher than 80 percent of your maximum heart rate then it is called high intensity training. And the fat is burned in a different way while training at 60% and 80%.

If you train for one hour at 60% of your maximum heart rate, you will burn calories during that one hour of workout. In this case it will be a far less intensity workout and of course this makes it easier for you too. But once the workout has finished, the fat burning will quickly decrease during the next hour after the training.

But if you train at 80% of your maximum heart rate for 20 minutes, you will burn less calories during this period when compared with one hour workout at 60% but your body will become a calorie burning machine for the next 12 hours or so. And this means you will burn more calories overall than in the case of one hour of workout at 60% of maximum heart rate.

The main reason for this is the post-exercise oxygen consumption. Because of the higher metabolic rate, the body will continue to remain the fat burning mode for many hours after a high intensity workout.

The heart monitor is a device which can be quite useful when you are training. The fat burning will be at its best if you can remain withing the range of 80 to 90 percent of maximum heart rate. This will also increase your body strength and stamina by many times. You can benefit more by training less, though the training will be more draining and tougher.

Both the pedometers and heart rate monitors are available from different brands and different prices and you can find according to your budget and requirements. Having these two gadgets can be quite useful when you are trying to lose weight.
